During the pandemic with less public transport and restricted travel more people have got their bikes out and given cycling a go or done more of it.
Undoubtedly cycling brings many benefits not just to the environment (less pollution) but also to peoples physical and mental health. Cycling helps your cardiovascular fitness as well as helping you keep fit and active. Cycling can make you feel a sense of freedom, giving people a sense of space and improving your mood. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Birmingham and King’s College London has found that cycling can even hold back ageing and keep our immune system young.
Wakefield District has some great cycle routes along canals and rivers and through countryside as well charities and projects supporting people on low income to get a bike and learn how to maintain it.
